Overview
About the Agency
The National Drug Agency takes the steps required at various times and under various circumstances to find solutions to the problems of drug use, peddling and trafficking. It identifies drug-related crimes, organised activities connected with drug use, and health problems arising from drug use, and implements national policies prepared to counter them.
The Agency monitors that government policies related to stopping drug use are implemented by government agencies, monitors the various programmes run for that purpose, and coordinates the work of all related agencies. It also provides treatment to people who use drugs, rehabilitates them, and works to reintegrate them into society.
In the work of stopping drug use, the Agency seeks the support of private parties, provides the assistance and advice they need, and works with them. It works with all related agencies to increase awareness among every part of society. It also works with foreign agencies related to drugs to run programmes in the Maldives, share information, and obtain benefit, experience and assistance for the Maldives from their knowledge and experience.

Our legal basis
Statutory Authority
The National Drug Agency derives its legal mandate from the Drugs Act (Law No. 17/2011).
Responsibilities of the Agency
- Taking the measures required, at different times and in different circumstances, to address drug use, peddling and trafficking.
- Identifying drug-related offences, violent acts arising from drug use, and the health problems caused by drug use, and implementing the national policies introduced to counter them.
- Monitoring whether government institutions are implementing the policies set by the Government on preventing drug use.
- Monitoring how the various drug-prevention programmes are being carried out, and coordinating the work of all relevant institutions.
- Treating people who use drugs, supporting their recovery, and working to return them to society.
- Securing the cooperation of private parties in drug-prevention work, providing them with the assistance and advice they need, and working together with them.
- Working with all relevant institutions to raise awareness among every part of society in the effort to prevent drug use.
- Working with international drug-related bodies to run programmes in the Maldives, share information, and secure benefit and assistance for the Maldives from their knowledge and experience.

The National Drug Agency is led by the Chief Executive Officer and the Director General. Work is organised into three main divisions, with a Quality Assurance Section reporting directly under the CEO line.

Reintegration Section
The primary purpose of the reintegration section is to support clients who are currently in treatment programs, as well as those who have completed them, as they transition back into society. This program focuses on helping clients reconnect with their families and communities, while also providing assistance in securing employment and educational opportunities. These services are designed to help clients rebuild their lives, strengthen their support systems, and maintain a drug-free lifestyle.

Assessment Section
In accordance with the Drug Act of 17/2011, the Assessment Section of the National Drug Agency conducts drug indicative assessments and screening of clients that are referred to NDA by the Drug Court, other government institutions and volunteer clients, to determine the best course of treatment.
